english version

Memoires of Paradise: Rebellion of Creatures

Tahiche Díaz is one of the most outstanding and exciting Spanish contemporary artists of his generation. He developed a very diverse oeuvre by creating his own narration – the narration of “El Paseante”- ”the “forgetful astronaut”. The story of “El Paseante” 45454573-H, who returns home from his 1460 day mission in search of possible new paradises. But the information is fragmented and the astronaut forgetful. The artist tries to reconstruct what has happened by gathering evidence. Tahiche Díaz developed this concept over many years, using ceramics as this favourite material. His artistic approach is conceptional, narrative and figurative in quite a ‘baroque’ way combined with virtuosic skills of modelling. Tahiche Diaz is a philosophical narrator who deals with the complexity of the modern world and its social, ecological and economic problems. This Exhibition Memories of Paradise – The Rebellion of the Creatures is a continuation of the narration of “Archaeological Pieces from the Forgetful Astronaut and Sounds from Paradise”. “This exhibition gathers Tahiche Diaz’s artistic output, produced over the last few years, together with new, in progress pieces, that have been created using various lines of work that run simultaneously. As a whole, the exhibition project reflects on the creator’s condition as an explorer as well as the understanding of the artistic creation as a form or a way of knowledge. Tahiche Díaz conceives artistic creation as a complex and multiple-layered process of inquiry that defines a – cognitive, philosophical, symbolic, poetic and political – space whose exploration and cartography are the artist’s objective. This concept is reflected in his work, in two key aspects. The first is that his finished works -mainly ceramics, although also paintings, drawings and videos- address questions relating to reflections on this space. It is art that talks about what doing art means, considering it as a form of knowledge, description, or even confirmation, of reality. The second aspect is the importance given to all the elements of the process -stages of the journey-, from sketchbooks, to several investigatory trials that, although “minor works”, help to illustrate the artist’s reflexive space. Based on these motives, Tahiche Diaz shows his sculptures, installations, models, videos, drawings, projects and sketchbooks. An open doors towards the artist’s space, proposing an ode to knowledge, science and the arts.” Ramiro Carrillo

Poem by Tahiche Díaz

Something in common

If my skins, bones and innards

as topologies and mountain ranges.

That coexist in a vast exterior.

That are composed of cells as tribes and cities,

full of molecules made from vacuum,

with atoms like people,

with neutrino souls,

that are here and appear

there that are there and at the same time here,

outside my skins, bones and innards I state;

that I’m here and there

that I’m inside and outside

(and sometime you).
