Frederick Johntz is a graduate of the Theater Arts program the University of California at Santa Cruz and the Cinema Studies program at San Francisco State University.  

In 1999 he teamed up with writer/director Mark Travis and formed “Travis-Johntz Productions” a Consulting and Development Company which they ran until 2009. 

In his capacity as Creative Consultant and Script Doctor, Frederick has worked with writers and directors on numerous films including MEN OF HONOR; starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr.; BARBERSHOP 1 & 2 starring Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer; BLACK IRISH starring Brendan Gleeson, Melissa Leo and Michael Angarano, on which he was also associate producer; NOT FORGOTTEN starring Paz Vega and Simon Baker, on which he was co-producer; NOTORIOUS, starring Angela Bassett and Jamal Wollard, FASTER starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thorton, and MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, winner of the directing award for Ava DuVernay at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. 

As a writer, Frederick is currently finishing the comedy LOVE ‘EM TO DEATH. His political thriller, LAST CEMETERY IN BERLIN, is being produced by Jonathan Sanger. He co-wrote the black-comedy REAL BUDDY with Steve Hudson for Mineworks films in Cologne. Frederick is attached to direct the thriller DECEPTION from his own script and recently finished the comedy/thriller KICKING ASH with co-writer Luise Lindermair.

Frederick’s film directing credits include the award winning short film TOAST (CINE Golden Eagle), the concert video TALKING LOUD with Jim Carroll, Michael McClure and Ray Manzarek; and DOWN THE PIKE, a video adaptation of the stage play by Bill Corbett.

Frederick has taught Writing, Directing and Acting at UCLA Extension, AFI’s Professional Training Program, the Hollywood Film Institute, the Film Farm in Kotla Poland, The Promenade Playhouse in Santa Monica and the Die Tankstelle and The Actors Space in Berlin Germany.

He has worked in theatre as a Director, Producer and Actor. He most recently directed DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA at the Actors Space in Berlin. 

He has developed and directing a number of one-person shows including BORN FEET FIRST with Diane Luby Lane and the award winning ECSTASY AND THE ICE QUEEN with Justine Moore, which ran for over a year and a half in Los Angeles and New York.  Frederick currently lives in Berlin where he continues to write, teach and consult.
